What are Lintels? Types and Uses of Lintels in Building Construction

Lintels is a horizontal member which is placed across the openings to bear the load of above structure. In a building construction, there are windows or doors for which some space needs to be left. Above that space we can't directly put bricks and Hence, these are used whose some portion lies on sideways bricks and then, it helps to distribute loads. Firstly, be clear that lintels are different from beams . A beam carries the load from slab and transfers it to columns to footing and then, finally to soil. But, lintels carries support of wall above it and then, transfers to adjacent wall portions. What does opening corresponds to? During, openings are left in wall due to doors, windows, cupboards, wardrobes, etc. Lintel on these openings supports the portion of wall situated above the openings and transmit the loads to adjacent wall portions. History of Lintels In classical western construction methods, a lintel is a load-bearing member and is placed over

Surveying in Civil Engineering

Surveying is one of the most important aspect of civil engineering. It involves the assessment of site and recording details about land. Measurement of angles, vertical and horizontal distance between points all these data help us to plan construction projects. The main principle of surveying is working from whole to part i.e., It is very essential to establish first a system of control points and to fix them with higher precision. Minor control points can then be established by less precise methods and the details can then be located using these minor control points by running minor traverses etc . It is for the prevention the accumulation of errors and to control and localize minor errors. Surveying is a method to determine relative position between two points on, above or beneath the earth surface and it also includes the art of establishing by predetermined angular and linear measurements. Levelling is a branch of surveying in which elevations of points are

Neoprene Pads: Bearings in bridges

Neoprene pads are special types of bridge bearings. Currently, they are used in many of the bridge construction. Because of they have elastomeric property, low maintenance cost, etc. and also many more properties. All you will get to know further in this post. To understand further, first let's discuss on components of Bridges: Components of Bridges Main structural components of a bridge: Deck (with surface and parapet) Girders / Beams Bearings Pier cap Piers and structures Pier base / foundation (piles and pile cap) Bridge Bearings Functions: Transfer forces from bridge superstructure to substructure Gravity Loads (self weight and vehicle load) Lateral Loads (earthquake and wind forces) It allows movements (translation and rotation) in between girders and pier cap. Due to its rubber like structure it loses its energy through deformations. It simplify the load transfer mechanism, such that it can be easily analysed. Bridge Bearings Types of

Laminated neoprene pad Experiment

Welcome to our website News on Crunch , as we know there are various applications of Laminated Neoprene pad under construction of bridges due to their elastomeric tendency. So, let's perform an experiment and get to know more about this: Objective(s) for Laminated Neoprene Pad To determine the equivalent modulus of elasticity of a laminated neoprene pad under axial compression load by plotting a stress-strain curve based on the recorded data. Materials and Resources Measured dimensions of laminated neoprene pad, L × B × t = 250 × 200 × 44 mm  Rubber layer: 8 mm thick 3 Nos. Steel plates: 3 mm thick 4 Nos. Top and bottom rubber cover: 4 mm thick 2 Nos. Side cover rubber: 6 mm thick (all four sides) Steel plate area: 238 × 188 mm = 44744 mm2 Shore-A hardness of the specimen: 70 (approximately ) Modulus of elasticity of steel = 205 GPa Code(s) Code 1 : Description(write it in Octave or Matlab ) clc  clear data = csvread('your csv file name(
